Abstract

The purposes of this study are to identify the effective nursing intervention for arthroplasty care and to investigate the effect on the demonstrational education of self care knowledge and implementation of arthroplasty patient.

The sample of this study includes 30(15 for control group and 15 for experimental group) patients with post arthroplasty patient admitted to orthopedic ward in E University Hospital in Seoul from June 2001 to March 2002. The questionnaire was used to collect the data. The questionnaire for this study included 13 items related to personal characteristics, 18 items related to the self care knowledge and 18 items related to self care implementation. This is designed by the investigators using relevant literature. The content validity of this questionnaire is established through the critical review of the questionnaire by one nursing professor, one orthopedic professor and one head nurse. The statistical tests used in the analysis of data included frequencies, percentage, mean and standard deviation, x2-test, t-test and Pearson Correlation Coefficient.

The findings of this study are as follows:

1) As a result of comparing the overall means of items related to self care knowledge, there is no significant difference found within two group at the time of post operation 2 weeks.

However, a significant difference was found at 2 weeks later from the discharge(t=3.57, p<.01).

2) As a result of comparing the overall means of items related to self care knowledge, there is no significant difference found within at the time of post operation 2weeks and 2 weeks later from the discharge in the control group. However, a significant difference was found in experimental group(t=2.85, p<.05).

3) As a result of comparing the overall means of items related to self care implementation, there is no significant difference found within two group at the time of post operation 2 weeks. However, a significant difference was found at 2 weeks later from the discharge (t=3.15, p<.01).

4) As a result of comparing the overall means of items related to self care implementation, there is no significant difference found within at the time of post operation 2weeks and 2 weeks later from the discharge in the control group. However, a significant difference was found in experimental group(t=2.39, p<.05).

5) The relationship of self care knowledge and implementation after demonstrational education of arthroplasty patient was no significant correlation coefficient.

Therefore, the findings of this study indicates that the demonstrational education is effective to improve self care knowledge and implementation of arthroplasty patient.
